In four games, Pepperdine took the MPSF championship over Hawaii to gain the automatic berth to the NCAA championships by a final tally of 24-30, 30-25, 30-25, 30-27.

Lance Walker notched 18 kills and 12 digs, both match-highs, to pace the victorious Waves. Sean Rooney added 16 kills and Fred Winters 10.

Junior Middle Blocker Brad Keenan, a National Player of the Year candidate, registered eleven blocks and four aces.

After a shaky opening game, the team rallied behind the 2,589 frenzied fans to sweep the final three. Keenan's three consecutive aces set the tone early in Game 2, and the Waves controlled the tempo from there on out. The last game was particularly thrilling, featuring a 25-25 tie before the Waves ran off three consecutive points to put themselves in position for the win.

Pepperdine's MPSF title is its first in four years. The Waves will be seeking their first national title since 1992, and fifth overall, at next weekend's NCAA championships.

Ball State and Penn State earned the other two automatic bids to the championships. The Waves may encounter the Rainbows of Hawaii for a fourth time, as the MPSF runner-up figures to nab the lone at-large berth. The Waves have beaten the Rainbows all three previous matches this season, although each took place at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Penn State will have home-court advantage for the festivities. Semifinals are Thursday at 3pm and 5pm Pacific. The Finals take place Saturday at 4pm.
